Panthers’ Pride: The Rise of Indian Basketball in New Zealand

​The Indian Panthers are a professional basketball team based in South Auckland, New Zealand, competing in the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL). Established in October 2024, the team is owned by INBL Pro.

The inception of the Indian Panthers marks a significant collaboration between New Zealand and India’s basketball communities. The initiative aims to provide Indian players with opportunities to compete internationally, thereby enhancing the sport’s profile in both countries. Parveen Batish, CEO of INBL Pro, emphasised that the team’s presence in the NZNBL is designed to create aspirational pathways for Indian players and to drive participation and engagement across India .​

Despite initial challenges, including visa delays and scheduling conflicts that led the team to start the 2025 season with a roster primarily composed of New Zealand players, the Indian Panthers remain committed to their mission. The organisation continues to work towards integrating Indian national players into the team, fostering cross-cultural exchange, and elevating the standard of basketball .
